Lot Essay

Turner of Oxford was fascinated by natural phenomena, observing in watercolour both the Aurora Borealis and Donati's comet. A number of drawings in the present technique are recorded and date from the period 1845-50. Stratus Clouds, Evening was sold in the Collection of Monsieur and Madame Gérald Bauer; Christie's, London, 22 January 2003, lot 19.
