Lot Essay

Having studied under Bonnat, Ellis travelled widely in Cyprus, Asia Minor, Egypt and the middle East, scenes which he is most known for. Originally from London, he started his career as an engineer on the District and Metropolitan railway, and returned to his home city to paint subjects such as this. A version of the present watercolour, signed and dated, was sold in these Rooms, 5 June 2007, lot 178.
