Das grossformatige Meisterwerk von Edouard Vallet Les chèvres ist 1926 entstanden. Vermutlich an der Gedächtnisausstellung des Künstlers in der Kunsthalle Basel im Jahre 1931 erworben, weilte es seitdem im Besitz der damaligen Käuferfamilie. Im 2006 erschienenen Catalogue raisonné von Bernard Wyder und Jacques Dominique Rouiller ist das Gemälde zwar unter der Nummer 611 aufgenommen, jedoch nur mit einer schwarz/weiss Abbildung und mit dem Hinweis 'Localisation inconnue' versehen.

Acquired presumably at the Edouard Vallet retrospective at the Basel Kunsthalle in 1931, it remained since then with the buyer's family.
