"GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY"
RUSSIAN, 17TH CENTURY
In the centre of the upper part, God Sabaoth resting in a bedstead, above him the Mother of God of the Sign, the two of them in a double glory, the circular one made of bodiless cherubs, the lozenge one portraying the Apocalyptic personifications of the evangelists on its corners, to the right side Christ shown as a winged angel being instructed by his Father, the latter supporting the Crucifix, the lower half of the composition depicting a Bishop blessing and bearing the Gospels, standing behind an altar, surrounded by groups of saints, a second altar with the Eucharist carried by angels and a seraph appearing on top of the congregation
