A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF THE LORD'S PRAYER 'OUR FATHER'
RUSSIAN, 18TH CENTURY
The prayer 'Our Father' rendered allegorically over nine compartments, each one illustrating a verse; beginning from the central scene at the top frieze, the Holy Trinity in a double glory standing for: Our Father, who art in heaven, to the left Christ blessing the crowd in the presence of Lord Sabaoth and to the right Christ represented as a King, visualising the verses: Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come respectively, the second register showing Christ on his way to Golgotha, Him preaching and the Last Supper, thus depicting the stanzas: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, the last three scenes symbolising the verses: forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, the figures portrayed with elongated proportions, the backgrounds showing cliffs and elegant buildings, painted with bright colours and gold for highlighting the details
