STS. SERGEI AND HERMAN, THE FOUNDERS OF THE VALAAM MONASTERY
RUSSIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY
The two monastic saints standing on the bank of the lake Lodaga, wearing the Great Schema, each holding an inscribed scroll, St. Sergei with his hand raised to his chest, St. Herman pointing to the monastery the two of them had founded, the latter located on the Valaam Island and dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, hence the representation of this event on the upper section of the icon, against a radiating, golden background, the arched frame decorated with stylized patterns
