QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

The cylindrical brushpot intricately carved in deep relief with a continuous scene depicting the Four Noble Professions, including an old man with a young child seated on a boat catching fish beneath an overhanging pine tree, peasants carrying bundles of sticks up a mountain pass, a boy riding a buffalo followed by the farmer with a hoe on his shoulder waving to a lady and child behind them, and a scholar reading in a pavilion accompanied by assistants preparing tea, the stone of a rich slightly mottled spinach-green tone

Each scene on this brushpot represents one of the Four Noble Professions. This concept probably originated during Han dynasty and constitutes what was considered to be the ideal hierarchical system for the layman.
