Lot Essay

The inlaid mosaic decoration seen here is typical of the Cosmati workshops operating in Rome in the 12th and 13th centuries. The square porphyry panels surrounded by bands of mosaic decoration can be seen in the decoration of numerous Italian churches of the period including the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura (see H. Decker, Italia Romanica - die hohe Kunst der romanischen Epoche in Italian, Vienna and Munich, 1958, fig. 115).
