A mother-of-pearl inlaid black lacquer four-tiered box and cover, 16th century
of long rectangular form inlaid in mother-of-pearl to the cover with a scholar and two attendants surrounded by rockwork and foliage beneath a partially clouded sky, decorated to the side of each tier with a small stylised flowerhead issuing vertical branches of foliage -- 9½in. (24.2cm.) wide, fitted wood base.
