A famille rose moulded 'Romance of the West Chamber' vase, 19th century
of tapering cylindrical form with high shoulders, surmounted by a waisted neck and a trumpet shaped mouth, decorated with shaped cartouches with narrative scenes from Xi Xiang Ji ('The Romance of the Western Chamber') reserved on a wan ground, between lappets enclosing floral sprays below bats alternating with floral tassels on the shoulders and panels enclosing characters above the foot, the neck with plantain, iron-red six character Qianlong seal mark -- 16 7/16in. (41.7cm.) high.

Lot Essay

The Romance of the West Chamber by Wang Shifu concerns the love affair between Cui Yingying and Zhang Gong. The lovers meet in the garden of the Monastery of Universal Salvation (si jiu pu). The monastery is invaded and Madam Zheng offers Yingying's hand in marriage to anyone who can save them. Although Scholar Zhang does save them Madam Zheng refuses to honour her promise. The lovers begin a clandestine relationship, but on learning of Yingying's affair, her mother sends Zhang away to try and achieve success in the examinations in the capital. Having succeeded in passing at the highest level Zhang returns and the lovers are reunited.
