the yellow silk ground woven in brightly coloured silks with nine blue dragons and the Twelve Symbols of Imperial Authority amidst cloud-scrolls and bats, with a sea-wave border below, the horse-shoe cuffs and borders of black silk woven with gilt dragons, lower sleeves replaced with orange silk

Lot Essay

From the manner of construction and the use of non standard orange silk for the lower sleeves, we can assume that this robe was made up from uncut yardage.

This robe was purchased by the vendor's family circa 1918.
