For the subject see Luke V:8, where Saint Peter after the miraculous draught of fishes, kneels before Christ and confesses his sins.

The artist painted at least one other version of this rare subject (signed and dated 1620 and of almost identical measurements, sold at Christie's London, 13 July 1979, lot 24). This depicted the scene at daytime, whereas in the present lot the artist chose the effect of moonlight to increase the drama of the episode. Comparsion of the heads of Christ and Saint Peter in the latter picture with those of Christ and the man behind Lazarus in the Raising of Lazarus of 1605 in the Museum of Aschaffenburg (A. Tümpel, Pieter Lastman, 1991, p. 28, fig. 14) suggests a date of execution of about this time and thus earlier than the version of 1620.

The subject must have appealed to a Pre-Rembrandtist artist like Pynas as it provided the opportunity to set a history painting in a landscape, as did also at the time, most notably, Adam Elsheimer
