POSTEL, Guillaume (1510-1581). De rationibus spiritus sancti lib. II. Paris: Pierre Gromors, 1543. 8° (171 x 105mm). Woodcut printer's device on title and woodcut initials, ruled throughout in red, retaining blank g6 (occasional light spotting). Early 19th-century calf gilt by Antoine Chaumont, Paris, covers with triple gilt fillets, flat spine with morocco lettering-piece and repeated crucifix tool, gilt board edges, gilt turn-ins with foliate roll, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION IN AN ANTOINE CHAUMONT BINDING. Postel's work sought to demonstrate that there was nothing within religion which did not conform to nature and reason. This copy is a particularly attractive example, ruled throughout in red and bound by Chaumont, 'one of the most important of the 1800-20 binders' (Ramsden French Bookbinders, p. 52) who was located at rue du Foin 209 in 1803, moving to rue de Foin 18, the address given on his ticket in this volume, by 1815.
