The Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore was staying with the artist William Rothenstein during the summer of 1912 during one of his European tours: Yeats was so struck by Tagore and his poems that he contributed an introduction to the immensely successful translated edition of Gitanjali, 'I have carried the manuscript of these translations about with me for days', he wrote, 'reading it in railway trains, or on the top of omnibuses and in restaurants, and I have often had to close it lest some stranger see how much it moved me'. Tagore was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in the following year.
