Lot Essay

The title The Little Jewish Bride is misleading as this etching is infact Saskia, the artist's wife, in the guise of Saint Catherine - accompanied by the toothed wheel of her martyrdom. Executed four years later than The Great Jewish Bride (see next lot), the image is one of the most sensitive and intimate of the artist's portrayals of Saskia, drawn on the plate with great freedom and deftness of touch.
