Lot Essay

The present oil is a study for a portrait in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, catalogued as 'Portrait of T. Braikevich' (see L. Salmina-Haskell, Russian paintings and drawings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1989, no. 133, pp. 88, 90).

Regarding the present work, Somov wrote: Recently I have been working on the head of a young woman, two poses on one canvas...I conceived it as one single painting that I want to paint this winter...
Letter dated 19 September 1933, p. 407
