I transferred the composition for a new painting on to board and added an additional figure of an old, sinister woman.

I decided to glaze over the standing woman in my painting [The apparition]. The painting improved and furthermore her face changed - she now looks more dreadful than before.

My last painting also pleased him [Benois], and he made valuable remarks on the spot: the figures from the vision must be done, as I had thought, in a more transparent and less corporeal way. Also, I must redo the absurd shadows on the wall and in the mirror - this is easy to correct. He said that I have astonishing colours...
