Lot Essay

Born in Minnertsga, Mancadan resided in Friesland for his entire career and was Mayor of Franeker from 1637-9. He is not thought to have started painting until he settled in Leeuwarden in 1645, presumably inspired by the Frisian scenery around the farm he owned at Siegerswoude. Working in this remote setting, Mancadan developed a personal and unmistakable style; his pictures, as here, usually focus on small corners of bare rocky landscapes rendered with a limited palette and highly detailed brushwork.
