John Hatley ws a Midshipman with Captain Cook on his last voyage of discoveries in July 1776. He later became First Lieutenant and served on the St. George during the conflict with France. In 1797 a mutiny broke out on the ship and it was decided the ringleaders should be hung on board. Hatley's intervention in this matter prevented the hangings and instead the conspirators were shackled. His bravery and conduct were rewarded with a promotion to the rank of Commander, and was subsequently awarded the gold medal of the Turkish Order of the Crescent and was part of the procession at the funeral of Lord Nelson.
