Lot Essay

Born Princess Sviatopolk-Chetvertinskaia, the sitter was the wife of Prince Dmitrii L'vovich Naryshkin (1758-1838), chamberlain to Alexander I and knight of the order of St. Andrew. She was the mistress of Tsar Alexander I of Russia for 13 years and had three illegitimate children by him. She remarried after her husband's death.
