Registered in the Semenovskii Regiment in 1777, Kikin entered military service in 1796, serving on the Staff. In 1812 was made acting general of the First Western Army, being present at the battle of Borodino among others. He saw further service with the army abroad and in 1826 appointed senator. He was the first to suggest the construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow to commemorated the fallen of the Great Fatherland War.
