Voir Welsch, R.L. et al., New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection, San Francisco, 2005, vol.2, p.182, fig.556, pour une autre peinture sur écorce provenant de la collection Paul Wingert. Selon l'auteur, les maro étaient traditionnellement portés autour de la taille par les filles en âge d'être mariées et les femmes mariées. Les jeunes filles ne portant pas de vêtement, le maro marquait le passage à l'âge adulte.
