Commander P.H.C. Pawson (grandson of Annie Lawson, Conder's sister-in-law) was told that the picture of the cherry trees in blossom in the orchard was inspired by an orchard near Newbury, Berkshire, which had belonged to his mother's family. Conder and Stella stayed regularly with the Lawsons at their family home, The Howe, Wallingford in the early 1900s.

Conder had married Stella Maris Belford, a Canadian socialite and widow, in Paris in December 1901.
