A veteran in the watch industry, Richard Mille began his career in 1974 as a commercial director for one of the world's largest watch companies where he remained for 20 years. In 2000, he started developing his own timepieces, inspired by the perfection found in the world of automobile and aviation. His line of watches includes a specially developed tourbillon escapement, the innovative technical choices applied to the design of this sophisticated mechanism required thousands of hours to develop. In August 2001, Richard Mille launched his first watch, the Tourbillon RM001, and quickly followed by the Tourbillon RM002, a further improvement of its predecessor featuring a titanium date and function indicator. In 2002, Mille introduced the Tourbillon RM003 with dual time indication.

The main feature of the present watch is its variable geometric rotor. This exclusive Richard Mille design allows the rewinding of the mainspring to be adapted most effectively to the user's activity level whether it be sporting or non-sporting environments. By adjusting the setting of the rib's placement, the rotor's inertia is modified to either speed up the winding process in the case of leisure arm movements, or slow it down when sporting activities are pursued. As a result, this invention allows the movement's winding mechanism to be personalised and optimised to the owner's lifestyle.

The RM005 Felipe Massa was developed in collaboration with the Brazilian Formula One racing driver Felipe Massa. Massa had been wearing the watch during numerous testing sessions and races, most notably the Turkish Grand Prix in 2006 where he enjoyed podium position.
