MILGAUSS Rolex launched the Milgauss model, the reference 6541, during the early 1950s. The model was protected against high electro-magnetic radiation and came in response to a demand from clients working in areas such as research laboratories and electro-engineering environments. The Milgauss is one of the most distinctive of all Rolex Sports models, the reference 1019 was the last "tool" watch designed for a specific activity to be made by Rolex. In production between 1966 and 1984, the model is only available in stainless steel. Rather unfortunately, in the end the demand never caught up with the supply and by the end of the 1960s, another model with the reference 1019 was only available by special order. Though the Milgauss appeared in the catalogues up until 1986, production was ceased in 1984. Milgauss, derived from the Greek word "Mil" for thousand, and "Gauss" is the unit for measuring magnetism. A typical standard watch movement can usually withstand 70-90 Gauss whereas the Milgauss keeps its incredible precision in a magnetic field up to 1,000 Gauss.
