Production of the reference 5004 began in 1995 and remains the most complicated model in Patek Philippe's line of stopwatches. The calibre CH 27-70 Q is the beating heart of this remarkable timepiece. The movement consists of no fewer than 407 miniscule parts and is based on an ebauche crafted by "Nouvelle Lemania" exclusively for Patek Philippe incorporating the patented split seconds disengagement mechanism and is capable of measuring elapsed time with accuracy to the fraction of a second.

The 5004, together with the reference 5959P released in 2005, are the only split seconds chronograph wristwatch currently in production by Patek Philippe.
