Oblong, the wide sides engraved on one side with a coat-of-arms below a viscount's coronet and with an inscription, the other side engraved with a list of the ships involved in the capture of Algier, the short sides engraved on one side with a depiction of the capture and further ships involved in the capture, the hinged cover with a drop ring handle, marked near rim, inside cover and underneath

The arms are those of Pellow for Edward Pellow, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757-1833).

The inscription reads 'In Testimony of the Courage & Honour of ADMIRAL LORD EXMOUTH on the Bombardment & Capture of ALGIER September 1816 Presented this Day of our Lord 17th May 1817

Lot Essay

Edward Pellew (1757-1833) was born into an old but impoverished Cornish family. The patronage of Lord Falmouth served him well throughout his early life. At the age of thirty-six when in command of the frigate Nymphe he captured the French frigate Cléopatra, the first success of the French Revolutionary War, for which he was knighted. He was successively made a baronet in 1796 and a peer in 1816 after his capture of Algiers in that year. He retired a Vice Admiral in 1821, dying in 1833.
