Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1953
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Lightly bin-soiled labels. Levels: one upper/top and one upper-shoulder
Tasting note: A lovely wine, Lafite at its beguiling best. Not a thruster, not a show off, a wine of exquisite charm and finesse. I have been fortunate enough to taste this wine some three dozen times, in bottles varying from halves to jeroboams, in an extraordinary variety of places and contexts. It was said to have been bottled over a period of nine months, so one might have expected some variations. All I can say is that I have never had a bad bottle (had, not tasted: one does not spit out a wine like this). Most recently, despite its maturity and delicacy, I felt it would survive, like the 1875. This is not a wine to describe. Words simply cannot do it justice. If you are ever fortunate enough to share a bottle, just let it speak for itself. Last noted, a perfect magnum at Walter Eigensatz's big bottle tasting in Wiesbaden, May 1993 ***** Having said this, it is now past its peak and one can expect some frailty unless a perfect bottle from an ideal cellar.
