Château Latour--Vintage 1947
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Lot 21 has a slightly damaged capsule. Lot 21 has a bin-soiled labels. Levels: lot 21 very top-shoulder and lot 22 one upper/top and one upper-shoulder
Tasting note: Predictably a big wine, but judging from quite a large number of notes, something of a roller coaster. First tasted in May 1954: 'a very big wine', and a decade later 'as dry, full, big and raw'. In short it was going to need time. Volatility noted in 1966, a certain austerity in the 1970s. Richness combined with noticeable acidity as it developed. Variable notes, though many good, fragrant and flavoury in the 1980s, and just a couple of notes in the last decade. A hefty, depth of colour; nose 'classic' but showing age; rim still full-bodied, tannic with fragrant aftertaste. A magnum, last noted Sept 1996. At best ****. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
