Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1988
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Tasting note: First tasted in Nov 1990, roughly four months after bottling. It looked younger than the '89, its nose muffled as if in the cold (which it was). Yet surprisingly sweet, very tannic of course and fleshier than expected. Not tasted again for eight years: the bouquet by now opened up and spicy; rich, singed flavour. This was at the Hollywood Wine Society's Mouton Seminar, March 1998 followed four months later by Penning-Rowsell's '10-year' first-growth tasting at which it showed off its richness of bouquet and flavour. Yet still youthful looking, with a rich, toasty nose which then reminded me of warm tea and, after an hour, 'sodden wholemeal biscuits'. Palate full of fruit, delicious flavour, easy to drink (all the wines at these '10-year' tastings were served during dinner), very rich but a slightly bitter finish. Last tasted July 1998 ***(*) 2008-2020 Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
