Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1982
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Levels 2.5 cms below the corks or better
Tasting note: 12,000 cases made, far fewer than the other 1er crus classés. Almost as many notes. So different in style, so good - and a totally different cépages mix, roughly 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, on the deep Pessac soil. At Penning-Rowsell's '10-year' first growth tastings, I have always insisted on serving the Haut-Brion first as it is so distinctive, as on this occasion, and, although good, it got my lowest mark. The word 'distinctive' used again at a tasting of first growth '82s for Christie's in Hong Kong, sweet, earthy (1995), The top wine at the Fête de la Fleur dinner in 1997: very sweet, good fruit, rich, characterful. At Rodenstock's blind tasting it was unmistakable, now mature, fully evolved bouquet, lovely flavour (1998). Curiously, noted as very tannic, with a metallic touch happily transformed by rather fatty lamb cutlets (dining at the château, 1998), 'needs time' at Latour (1999), Most recently: a glowing, mature, tile-red; sweet, now very soft, rich, complete. Tannin assimilated. Last noted at the MW Haut-Brion tasting, Jan 2000 ***** Superb. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
