Lot Essay

The first is a detail after the original in the Bayerische Staatsgemälde Sammlungen, Alte Pinakothek, Munich (Alte Pinakothek, München, 1983, p.433, no.340). The original of the second, oil on canvas, 75 x 59 cm, circa 1626-1632, is in the Rijksmuseum (E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, II, 1988, no.531, with ill.). The sitter, Johannes Franck, is recorded as a painter in C. de Bie, Het Gulden Cabinet, 1662, p.581, but no work of his has hitherto been identified.

The artist Willem Justus Ising was active in The Hague and Batavia.
