Lot Essay
The here offered following four lots originally belonged to the French educator Gaston Louis Eugène Dutilleul who commissioned Royère to design furnishings and complete ensembles for his numerous personal and professional establishments. It was in Dutilleul's Royère decorated Paris townhouse that he established his eponymous school for 500 students specializing in the needs of children with learning disabilities.
Shortly after Royère's gallery on Rue de Fauborg Saint Honoré in Paris opened in 1949, Dutilleul passed by and, enthralled by what he saw, approached Royère. They began a working relationship and long term friendship. Royère design a vast number of objects for Dutilleul and his various residences housed many of Royère's most famous furnishing including the Ours Polaire armchairs and couch, Trèfle chairs, a Flaque coffee table, as well as numerous examples of Royère's finest lighting designs such as his Hérisson and Serpentine wall lamps.
