[LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION]. JEFFERSON, Thomas. "Messages of the President of the United States." In: The Political Cabinet. Boston, [1806-07].

8o (246 x 146 mm). Modern brown half morocco, uncut.

FIRST EDITION. The Political Cabinet was a separately titled and paginated section of The Monthly Anthology, issued as an appendix to volumes 3 and 4 for 1806-07. It has the running title "American State Papers." An introductory paragraph suggests that this section be bound separately from the work to which it was appended. The section attached to volume 3 consists of 96 pages, with pages 39-92 containing Jefferson's Message of 6 February 1806. It omits Clark's "Statistical View of the Indian Nations." The section for volume 4 contains Clark's letter from St. Louis on pages 6-8, dated 3 September 1806 upon the expedition's return. The Political Cabinet also contains reports related to the explorations of Sibley, Dunbar, Hunter and Pike. Graff 3312; Howes P-436; Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition 2b.7; Sabin 40826; Wagner-Camp-Becker 5b.
