Second American edition. "The second edition of his History, which was essentially a plea for congressional recognition of his claims for compensation, is particularly rare, with only three other copies being recorded--one at Harvard University, another at the University of Michigan, and the Streeter copy (present owner not known)" (John Howell, Anniversary Catalogue 65, containing an extensive note on the bibliographical difficulties of this pamphlet). The Krasnoff copy collates the same as the Harvard and Streeter copies, with pages [1]-4 and [9]-12; the Michigan copy contains pp. 5-8. "The pamphlet was first published in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1849, in thirty-seven pages of 'irregular pagination' (Powell). It has been believed that the 1850 edition reprinted only the first twelve pages, and that both the Harvard and Streeter copies were incomplete because they lacked pages 5-8. Based on the evidence of [Howell's and the Krasnoff] copy, however, it would appear that only pages [1]-4 and [9]-12 were reprinted, and that pages 5-8 were intended to be inserted from the 1849 edition" (John Howell, ibid). VERY RARE; both the 1849 and 1850 editions of this pamphlet are exceedingly rare, with none of the 1849 and only two of the 1850 issues appearing at auction in the last 30 years. Graff 2289; Sabin 37263 note (incorrectly collating the Harvard copy as 12 pages); Streeter sale VI:3366 (collating as above: "It would seem that this is the rarest of the various Hall Kelley pieces.")
