PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "Presented to J.H. Thompson Esq by his friend The Author, New York 6th May 1854" (possibly in the hand of a secretary). Included in this copy also is a rare photographic portrait of Franchère mounted on the title.
