FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of this famous Andros tract, the first of five pieces written by Increase Mather while in England in quest of the new Charter for Massachusetts, which he obtained in 1691. It was first printed at Boston separately in December 1688, and a few weeks later appeared as No. 10 in this Sixth Part of Janeway's "Collection of Papers." The paper "relates to the attempt to take away from the New England colonies by Quo Warranto and other proceedings the 'ancient Rights and Priviledges' which they had enjoyed under their charters. Complaint is made of the arbitrary acts of Sir Edmund Andros... [Mather's] paper contains a copy of the Petition to the King (probably drawn up by Mather), of John Gibson, aged 87, and George Willow, aged about 86, on behalf of their neighbours the inhabitants of Cambridge and New England asking for relief; also another petition by Increase Mather and two New England clergymen" (Church). Holmes describes six later editions, and devotes 12 pages to a description and discussion of this important work. This copy is the variant state with the catchword "mads" on p.31. Alden & Landis 689/169; Church 714; Holmes 79b; Sabin 81492, 46708, 9372. VERY RARE.
