Wilson's defense to the same charges, with many of the same excuses: difficulty getting transport, menacing "negroes and whites" roaming the countryside; and a Mrs. Lewis, who seems to have been the source of most of the delay: "I then was obliged to stay [at her house] until the next morning...," etc. Mentions the evacuation of Beaumont and other aspects of the campaign. -- PICKERING, Timothy (1745-1829).
