A handsome volume aptly augmented by John Sturt's (1658-1730) illustrations probably based on his plates for his edition of Samuel Wesley's versifications of the Bible (Old Testament, 1704 and New Testament, 1715). Boase records that Thomas Baskett used Sturt's illustrations for his Bibles of 1721, 1723, and 1751. "In some of these there is an (engraved) title-page: 'Printed and sold by Richard Ware... to bind up with all sorts of House Bibles'. This practice of publishing prints for insertion was common at the time. James Cole did another set of 200... for Richard Ware." John Baskett held the office of King's printer and Bible patent from 1739, however he is infamous for having published the so-called 'Vinegar Bible' in 1717. After his death in 1742 his sons Thomas and Robert retained the patent. Boase Book Illustrators in 18th Century England pp. 72-73; Henry R. Tedder The Barkers and the Early History of the Bible-Patent in The Library Chronicle, pp. 161-165, 1885.
