FIRST EDITION, one of three editions printed the same year as Kidd's execution. The Governor of New York, Lord Bellomont, took up his appointment in 1695 with special instructions to suppress the widespread piracy along the colony's coast. With Bellomont's approval William Kidd was given command of a privateer, the Adventure, but Kidd turned pirate himself, plundering ships of friendly powers. Returning from Madagascar in 1699, Kidd was captured, jailed and sent to London for trial in April 1700. He was found guilty of murdering one of his sailors and hanged on 23 May 1701, leaving behind dazzling tales of vast treasure he had carefully sequestered. Alden & Landis 701/134; Church 797; JCB I 11; Sabin 37703.
