8o (248 x 154 mm). 100 HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED PLATES (9 double-page and one folding) by I. Watts, G. Barclay, F. George, A. Aglio and others after Miss Drake and Miss C.C. Sowerby. (Some light darkening, plates with plant names identified in ink, mostly in margins.) Contemporary half morocco (wear to spine ends and edges).

FIRST EDITION of Moore's guide to orchids, which was strongly influenced by Dr. John Lindley's orchid studies. Moore's classification of the genera follows that laid down by Lindley in his Folia Orchidaceae, and Moore also re-used the original orchid plates from the Botanical Register, latterly edited by Lindley. Moore added some further orchid plates, to "render the volumes illustrative of all the genera worthy of cultivation", and was assisted in writing the letterpress by "able practical cultivators" who remain unnamed. Not in Nissen BBI or Stafleu & Cowan.
