COOPER, James Fenimore. "Home as Found: Lost Chapter." In: Brother Jonathan. New York: Wilson and Company, January 1841- December 1842.
2o (292 x 205 mm). (Some spotting and staining.) Contemporary half sheep, marbled boards (scuffed, joints starting); modern quarter red morocco gilt slipcase.
FIRST EDITION. The "Lost Chapter" of Home as Found (Vol. I. pp. 19-22) was to have been read as part of Cooper's case for the prosecution in his most recent libel action against James Watson Webb of the Morning Courier and New York Enquirer: "it contains no libels, other than some pretty gross ones on the fair sex generally, in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, but as they are extracted verbatim from the columns of the Courier and Enquirer, we can throw the moral -- legal there will be none -- responsibility on that very consistent and conscientious journal" (Cooper, letter to Weld, 9 December 1841). Also publishing four of Cooper's letters (Vol. I. pp. 15-16, 185-188, 355-357, 414-418) in which he makes further attempts to demonstrate that he had not intended to represent himself as Edward Effingham in Home as Found (1838). Beard IV Part 13; Spiller and Blackburn p. 201.
