4o bound in 2s (275 x 218 mm). 4 engraved plates, numerous illustrations in the text (some browning and spotting, some offsetting from insertions.) Original cloth-backed marbled paper boards (scuffed at the corners); modern quarter red morocco slipcase. Provenance: E.E. de Lancey (note dated 1920); James Fenimore Cooper (letter addressed to him dated 1932).

First published in 1850 by G.E. Wood in The Parthenon.[With:] Autograph note signed "E.E. de Lancey", presumably to Cooper's grandson James Fenimore Cooper, Geneva, N.Y., 6 September 1920. (80 x 112 mm). "I have heard the 'Lake Gun' many times, as a boy in the 70's. Of late years it has ceased, and is unknown to this generation." Also a typed letter signed to Cooper's grandson from Morris G. Bishop: " . . . the only mention I have found [of The Lake Gun] is in your edition of Cooper's Correspondence. I should like to ask you, therefore, if the Lake Gun ever appeared in book form, or in a magazine. It would certainly seem probable, since it was already written and paid for." Spiller and Blackburn 52.
