Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1959
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Levels: top and upper shoulder; slightly damp stained labels
"An almost indecent number of notes, coincidentally at almost regular intervals. Richly coloured from the start, a deep, somewhat musky nose, soft ripe and luscious at five years of age - in fact not long after bottling. Blossoming beautifully through the 1970s, concentrated, magnificent. Colour deepening, a warm old gold, fabulous crème brulée bouquet, high extract (with Brie de Meaux at a Lafite dinner at the old Boulestin's in 1980). Fifty years of life predicted in 1983m a scent reminding me of my grandmother's duck egg custard. On through the 1980s, paeans of praise, a doubly memorable bottle dining in Eaton Square with Madeleine and Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1994. By 1998 a fairly deep gold with a touch of orange; high-toned peach-skin bouquet; still very sweet with marvelous flesh and fat, great length and finish. Most recently: a rich, apricot and lime blossom bouquet of great depth; sweet, powerful, its flesh and fat balanced by its excellent acidity. A hot, dry finish with a touch of caramel. Last noted, blind, at Wilfred Jaeger's second dinner in San Francisco, March 2002 *****" MB, Vintage Wine
