A POLYCHROME DECORATED OVAL TABLE TOP
MID-19TH CENTURY
Marquetry veneered and inlaid in various mediums with fan, geometric and interlaced foliate designs and centred by a roundel with interlaced date '1867', on a later decorated stand
20in. (50.8cm.) high; 44in. (111.5cm.) wide; 30¾in. (78cm.) deep
Provenance
As the 19th century progressed increasing efforts were made to develop substances which could be produced cheaply, to replicate more expensive materials and decorative processes and it is possible that this table top was made for the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1867 to demonstrate the various applications of these materials.
A leading exponent of this research was Alexander Parkes who exhibited some of his wares, derived from cellulose nitrate,at the London International Exhibition of 1862 and at Paris in 1867.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 15% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
