Of rectangular form, the panelled sides decorated with bamboo, the front depicting a muscular dragon above a pierced lattice frieze with similar inset cartouche, the legs with lion-mask mounts and with a pierced undertier and paw feet

Lot Essay

Gabriel Viardot, sculptor in wood, is largely remembered for his particular version of Asian style furniture, and was advertsied as créateur des meubles dans le genre chinois et japonais. He exhibited widely, including at Crystal Palace in 1851, and was both participant and jury member for the 1867, 1878 and 1889 International Exhibitions in Paris. His major success was at the 1889 Parise Exposition Universelle where the firm was awarded a gold medal.
