With a pierced foliate three-quarter gallery and foliate and gadrooned edge above a frieze drawer with a hinged fall-front revealing a leather lined writing surface and four short drawers, with seven further drawers below, the escutheons modelled as pairs of cherubs supporting a foliate and ribbon-tied cabochon and with foliate-framed panelled sides and a foliate mounted plinth base, the lock stamped 'DIEHL Rue Michel le Comte 19 PARIS'

Lot Essay

A native of Steinbach, Germany, Diehl (d.1885) settled in Paris in 1840 and established a large atelier at 39, rue Saint-Sebastien, where, by 1870, he employed more than 600 craftsmen. Diehl manufactured all kinds of coffrets as well as small furnishings and meubles de mariage. He participated in all the major International exhibitions during the middle of the 19th century commencing with the Great Exhibition in 1851.
