Lot Essay

The present owner's mother was an ambulance driver in London with the FANYs during the Second World War. She met Vaughan at the Air Raid Protection (ARP) Ambulance Centre at the beginning of the war, and they became close friends. She and Vaughan used to spend their leave days going out on Vaughan's motorbike, and Newlands Corner was one of their favourite spots. It was on one of these trips that Vaughan painted the present work.
