A RARE BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE BOTTLE
CHINA, TRANSITIONAL, TIANQI PERIOD (1621-1627)

拍品專文

Square bottles such as this were based on Dutch gin bottles and were one of the earliest European shapes made in China during the 17th century. Another square bottle with similar 'screw' neck, but with rounded shoulder and painted with different decoration was included in the exhibition, Chinese Ceramics of the Transitional Period: 1620-1683, China House Gallery, China Institute in America, 21 October - 29 January 1984, no.5. The present example is a more refined shape and the painting also is a very different style than that on the cited example.
Compare, also, a pair of bottles of more similar shape, but with a plain cylindrical neck and painted with landscapes, included in the exhibition, Chinese Blue and White - Wan Li to K'ang Hsi, Marchant & Son, London, 1980, no.55.
