De forme carrée aux angles lobés, la couche supérieure rouge finement sculptée jusqu'aux couches de couleur verte et ambre, au centre de deux dragons à cinq griffes, au corps sinueux, volant au-dessus de rochers battus par les flots, entourés de nuages et disposés de part et d'autre d'un médaillon sculpté d'un caractère shou stylisé, la bordure ornée de cartouches de pivoines et grues, le revers reprenant les mêmes panneaux décorés d'emblèmes auspicieux et lingzhi, les coins rehaussés de trigrammes, la base laquée noir ; petits manques

A tray of this unusual design was sold in our London Rooms, 10 June 1996, lot 8; and another is illustrated in Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, 1985, pl.331.
Carved in the style of a Jiajing lacquerware, the tray was evidently inspired by the mid-Ming prototype illustrated, ibid., pl.175, which has an identical composition to the present lot.
